Early Reading
Program For A Child In The Early Print Reading Stage:
KG - 2nd
Grade
If your child’s reading skills
are developing at a typical pace, he will be at the early
print reading stage of the reading process by the time he is
five years old. In order to help him progress to the next
stage of the reading process, it is helpful to look into
available early reading programs and to begin implementing
them immediately.
One of the most well-known and
popular early reading programs is Hooked on Phonics. The
Hooked on Phonics line offers a wide variety of early reading
programs based on age and reading ability. One such program is
the Learn to Read – Kindergarten program. This program is
ideal for a child in the early print reading stage.
The Hooked on Phonics
Learn to Read-Kindergarten program is one of the most comprehensive
early reading programs available to parents. It includes
flashcards, musical CD’s, a workbook, 24 reading books, and a
fun computer CD-ROM that helps reinforce skills with fun
games. With this program, your child will learn about letters
and sounds and how they come together to form words. This is
ideal for a child who is in the early print reading stage
because a child in this stage of the reading process
understands the purpose of words, but still has difficulty
reading them and sounding them out.
Once your child has progressed
through the kindergarten program of Hooked on Phonics, he
should be well on his way to entering into the next stage of
the reading process, but he is not quite there yet. To be
officially in the next stage of the reading process, which is
early strategic reading, he also needs to have an
understanding of beginning and end word sounds. The
Learn to Read-1st Grade early reading programs
will help your child progress to this level.
Using the Learn to Read – First
Grade program, your child will move beyond reading simple
storybooks and will begin reading chapter books that are
provided with the program. These chapter books are
specifically designed to reinforce the skills your child has
learned while working through the first two early reading
programs designed by Hooked on Phonics. Just as with the
kindergarten program, the Learn to Read-1st Grade edition
mentioned above comes complete
with audio CD’s, workbooks and flashcards. It also supplies
storybooks and chapter books, which your child will progress
to as he works through the program.
After completing these first two
early reading programs, your child will be ready to progress
to the next stage of the reading process -
Learn to Read-2nd Grade . But what exactly is
being taught with these early reading programs? As the name
implies, Hooked on Phonics helps teach your child phonics
skills. The Learn To Read 2nd Grade program uses proven learning methods to provide a strong foundation in phonics and reading. Using audio CDs, flash cards, and workbooks filled with activities and stories,
kids learn about long vowels, complex vowels, and challenging
sound combinations. Phonics skills are the ability to relate letters to
spoken sounds. Research has shown that children capable of
making these associations are better able to learn to read.
The
Learn to Read-2nd Grade
program combines these skills with intriguing books that make
your child want to read and put his new skills to use.
In combination with the Hooked on Phonics early reading
programs, it is beneficial to work on Dolch Sight Words. Dolch
Sight Words are words that don’t necessarily follow phonics
rules, but they are words that are frequently encountered in
reading. Since these words don’t always follow phonics rules,
they must be mastered to be read on “sight.” Memorizing these
words is similar to memorizing multiplication tables – your
child might be able to figure them out by using his skills,
but being able to recognize them immediately makes reading
much easier.
The Hooked on Phonics and
Dolch
Sight Words early reading programs work well together. With
these two early reading programs, combined with your helpful
guidance and patience, your child will be ready for the next
stage of the reading process in no time!
