Finding an
Early Reading Program for a Child in the Early Strategic and
Moderate Strategic Reading Stage
If your child has mastered the
early print reading stage of the reading process, he is now
ready to enter the early strategic reading stage.
At this stage of the reading
process, your child is able to guess at words based on
beginning sounds, but he has not mastered the ability to use
context clues to figure out a word. Therefore, your child
might make guesses at words, but his guesses might not make a
lot of sense. For this reason, it is important to continue
working with a comprehensive early reading program with a
child who is in this stage of the reading process.
The goal at the strategic
learning stage of the reading process is to move toward the
final stage, the moderate strategic stage. One of the
characteristics of the final stage is showing an understanding
of vowel sounds. Therefore, the Hooked on Phonics early
reading program can be very helpful.
The
Learn to Read-2nd Grade
Hooked on Phonics early reading program places an emphasis on
teaching long vowels and complex vowels. It accomplishes this
through the use of audio CD’s, workbooks, flashcards, and
interesting activities and stories. It also includes
storybooks and chapter books that help reinforce the lessons
taught in the early reading program.
The Hooked On Phonics early
reading program can also be used along with several wonderful
websites that teach vowel sounds. At the
Vowel Sounds
Essential Site your child can click on vowel sounds and hear
the sound of that vowel.
Instructor Web also provides several
worksheets on vowel sounds. Your child will also get to hear
several sounds, and even allows you to create your own vowel
sound worksheets for free.
Another fantastic early reading program for teaching vowel
sound is
Vowel Pals.
With the Vowel Pals early reading
program, each of 18 different vowel sounds are made into a
Vowel Pal character. Each character has its own song that
that is sung by the Vowel Pal. Each Vowel Pal also has special
games and provides examples of words that use the Vowel Pal’s
sound. To learn more, visit the Vowel Pals website.
Once your child has mastered
vowel sounds, he is ready to move to the final stage of the
reading process, the moderate strategic reading stage. At this
stage, your child knows the basics of reading and of story
structure. At this point, however, he still needs to hone his
skills and increase his speed. The good people at Hooked on
Phonics have an early reading program to address this level,
as well.
The Hooked on Phonics Master
Reader early reading program is ideal for your child once he
reaches the final stage of the reading process. If your
child’s reading skills have been developing at a typical rate,
she should be ready for this early reading program by the time
she is seven or eight years old.
In the Master Reader program,
your child will learn to read with a greater speed and
accuracy. At this stage, your child will learn to depend less
on sounding out each individual letter in a word. Instead, he
will learn the skills needed to break words down into their
smaller parts, which will increase fluency. The Master Reader
program includes books, storyboards, and computer CD-ROMS to
help your child further develop his reading skills. Hooked on Phonics Master Reader
program will give your child the confidence to read anything put in front of him. Click here to learn more about the
Master Reader Program.
If your child has reached the
final stage in the reading process, the key to reading
improvement is to provide many opportunities to read. The more
your child practices his reading skills, the better reader he
will become. An excellent book list can be found at
http://nancykeane.com/rl/. Here, you and your child can find books based on your favorite
genre, favorite authors, and around specific themes. It even
provides lists of suggested books to read that are similar to
other books you may have enjoyed.
Investing in an early reading program will pay high dividends
for both you and your child. Be sure to spend time reading
with your child and teaching phonics skills, and he will
become a strong, successful reader.
